Personal Development
At The Laurel, Personal Development is inclusive, ambitious and transformative. We equip every pupil with secure, detailed knowledge through a rich programme of personal, social, health and economic education, relationships education and citizenship. Our pupils grow into confident, resilient and independent young people who reflect deeply, act with integrity and work exceptionally well with others. We know our pupils as individuals and provide highly effective pastoral care, anticipating need and removing barriers so that every child participates fully and thrives. Through extensive, carefully tailored opportunities and strong engagement with local employers and post-16 providers, pupils understand their options, know how to achieve their ambitions and are exceptionally well prepared for life beyond school. We are proud of our Personal Development offer here at The Laurel.
Personal Development Calendar
Our Personal Development Calendar is carefully mapped and intentionally designed to bring learning to life across the year. A deliberately aligned form time curriculum ensures Personal Development priorities create a coherent and cumulative learning experience for every pupil. We map national and international events, celebrations, religious festivals, days of remembrance and key safeguarding themes, ensuring our programme is fluid, flexible and responsive to both global moments and local context. Through this approach, we actively build cultural capital, promote a love of reading, strengthen oracy and develop financial literacy. Our calendar is shared with parents, strengthening partnership and ensuring that the values, knowledge and experiences shaping our pupils are visible, meaningful and impactful.
Experiences
Our inclusive trips and experiences programme is a powerful extension of our Personal Development curriculum, designed to broaden horizons and strengthen every character. We provide a wide range of meaningful, well-planned opportunities that build cultural capital, deepen understanding of the world and prepare pupils for life beyond school for every student. From adventure and outdoor challenge to cultural visits and inspirational encounters, our experiences promote bravery, resilience and independence. They are aspirational and inclusive, ensuring that every pupil — regardless of any perceived barrier — can participate fully. These moments of excitement and discovery are not add-ons; they are integral to who we are. They create lasting memories, shape ambitions and, in many cases, change lives.
Enrichment
Our enrichment programme is designed to be inclusive, inspiring and accessible to every student, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to discover new interests and develop their talents. We offer a wide range of clubs that challenge and motivate students in a positive, supportive environment, from competitive sports and STEM projects to creative clubs, performing arts and reading initiatives. Students are also encouraged to engage with data and problem-solving, take part in charity work, and express themselves through creativity and collaboration. By providing diverse opportunities and celebrating every contribution, our enrichment programme helps all students feel valued, confident and connected to our academy community.
External Programmes
Our external programmes provide inclusive opportunities that help every student broaden their aspirations and realise their potential. Through partnerships with initiatives such as the Ambition Programme and The Brilliant Club, students are supported to develop confidence, academic curiosity and ambition for their future. These programmes give students access to university-style learning, expert mentoring and experiences beyond the classroom, ensuring that all learners – regardless of background – feel supported to aim high and succeed. By opening doors to new pathways and providing personalised guidance, our external programmes play an important role in helping every student feel empowered, included and prepared for the next stage of their journey.
Careers
Our careers programme is built on a strong commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to explore their future and realise their potential. We inspire students by providing inclusive experiences that broaden horizons and build confidence, supported by guidance from staff and external professionals with real expertise. Through college and university visits, meaningful work experience, and encounters with a wide range of career pathways, students gain the knowledge and aspiration needed to make informed choices about their next steps. By placing inclusivity at the heart of our careers programme, we ensure that every student feels supported, empowered and prepared for the world beyond the academy.
Student Leadership
Our student leadership programme is rooted in inclusivity, ensuring that every voice matters and every student has the opportunity to shape their school community. We listen to our students through a strong and active student voice, creating meaningful opportunities for collaboration, leadership and community engagement. By working together, students help to change and improve our academy, contributing ideas, representing their peers and making a positive impact both within school and beyond. Through inclusive leadership opportunities, we empower students to build confidence, develop responsibility and play an active role in creating a supportive and respectful community for all.

‘Taste the World’ – Cultural Cuisine at The Laurel
Taste The World is our exciting catering initiative designed to support students’ personal development through food. By exploring dishes from across the globe, our catering team helps students discover new cultures, traditions, and flavours—one meal at a time. From vibrant street food to classic cultural favourites, students are encouraged to be curious, open-minded, and confident in trying something new. Food becomes more than fuel; it’s a way to spark conversations about diversity, respect, and the world beyond the classroom, helping our students grow into culturally aware and adventurous individuals.
